Curriculum
IGCSE
Welcome to the IGCSE area of the website.
We are proud to offer a wide range of subjects, leading to Cambridge International examinations, to our students.
Choosing the correct IGCSE courses is a key point in any student’s life as it can dictate the direction their educational life takes. Our staff work with our students to ensure that they make appropriate choices for their future career paths.
We encourage our students to choose as broad a range of subjects as possible to help them develop all the necessary skills they will need in preparation for the next stage of their education.
INTERNATIONAL GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION GUIDE
IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the international version of the English GCSE. IGCSE is the world’s most commonly taken international examination.
All of our IGCSE courses follow the Cambridge International Examination syllabi.
Our students usually take 8 subjects for IGCSE and have some choice over which subjects they study (see Key Stage 4 – Subject Choices). We invite Year 9 parents and students to an information meeting in late January or early February at which we explain IGCSE and our options system.
IGCSE is a two year course taken during Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), usually with the examination in June at the end of Year 11. Examination results are announced by CIE in mid August before the start of the next academic year. Examinations are graded A* to G.
KEY STAGE 4 SUBJECT CHOICES
Following the English system students spend Years 10 and 11, when they are aged 14 to 16, in Key Stage 4. During these years all students study IGCSE courses for which they take the examinations at the end of Year 11.
All students are expected to study 8 subjects for IGCSE. These must include Mathematics, English, Thai, and at least one Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) . Although all students take Thai, only those who are native speakers are expected to take the IGCSE examination.
For their other subjects selections are made from Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Design Technology, Food Technology, Geography, History, ICT, Mandarin, and Physics.
The top Year 10 and 11 English sets normally take both IGCSE First Language English and IGCSE World Literature. Other students take IGCSE Second Language English.
We invite Year 9 parents and students to an information meeting in late January or early February at which we explain IGCSE and our options system.
In addition to their IGCSE subjects all students also have non-examined classes in Physical Education and PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education).
PHYSICAL, SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION IN KEY STAGE 4
Physical, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is a vital part of the students’ learning week. Topics covered deal with issues of which young adults need to be aware. This will enable them better to navigate day-to-day life and to negotiate challenges they may face, such as social media use, bullying or stress.
Not only do the students learn about these important issues, they are also given the tools to respond appropriately in their interactions with both the school and the wider community.
Included in the PSHE curriculum are sporting events which aim to emphasise the sense of belonging to teams. These events help to develop teamwork through competitive games, to make bonds with others and to develop leadership skills.
CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS
CIE is a non teaching department of the University of Cambridge in the UK. CIE is one of the world’s largest providers of international examinations.
In Key Stage 4 , when students are in Years 10 and 11, all our subjects follow CIE syllabi. These lead to IGCSE examinations at the end of Year 11. The IGCSE is a well established internationally recognised qualification and is, in fact, the world’s most commonly taken international examination.
CIE set the subject syllabuses and both set and mark the examination papers. This means that the examinations are completely independent of the school which is one of the reasons they are so highly regarded.
To help them to prepare for these examinations all students take a school examination in all of their chosen subjects at the end of Year 10 and in the middle of Year 11.
BOARDING
St. Stephen’s International School Khao Yai boasts the first boarding school in Thailand.
